]]>Students currently enrolled in any graduate program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania or who completed a graduate degree in December 2012 are eligible to submit a proposal to present recently completed or ongoing research or creative works. Research done in collaboration with faculty, other students, or practicing professionals is eligible as long as the student has played a substantial role in the activity.
Abstracts must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2013.

]]>The School of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to announce that Professor Richard Kemp, Department of Theater and Dance, has received a funding award in the amount of $10,110 from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education for his project, "Feasibility Study for the Incorporation of Video Technology in Content and Delivery of Theater and Arts Administration Courses at IUP and SRU."
Awarded through the Faculty Professional Development Council, the grant supports Kemp and his colleagues, Professor Brian Jones of IUP and Professor Colleen Reilly of Slippery Rock University, in an innovative research project linking the two universities.
The three investigators will study the potential and feasibility of using real-time video interaction at a distance in theater instruction and performance. They will experiment with the possibility of doing this in courses they teach in performance, design, and arts administration.
The results of their investigation will be applied to future collaborations between IUP and Slippery Rock.

Larkin and his research team will examine the reproductive success of the imperiled Golden-winged Warbler at sites managed for the species in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
]]>Jeffery Larkin, Department of Biology, was invited to be a speaker at Pennsylvania State University’s Goddard Forum, Oil and Gas Development Impacts on Forested Ecosystems: Research and Management Challenges.
This conference aims to bring together scientists, managers, conservation organizations, and industry representatives who are working with oil and gas development to share research results and management strategies. The pertinent questions revolve around how we can manage the gas development activities in a manner which preserves our environmental quality of life and deals with our social needs while providing economic benefits to our citizens and bolstering our supply of clean domestic energy. Larkin’s talk, “Reclaiming Marcellus Shale Pads as Early-Successional Habitat,” will focus on establishing guidelines for restoring oil and gas pads to native vegetation in order to minimize the impacts of energy development on wildlife.

Faculty and staff researchers were also recognized for their outstanding commitment to sponsored projects by the School of Graduate Studies and Research and the IUP Research Institute. Jenkins was awarded $102,480 for “Act 101-2011/2012 Indiana Campus” and received $59,590 “Act 101-2011/2012 Punxsutawney Campus.”
The Higher Education Equal Opportunity Program, established by Act 101 of the Pennsylvania legislature in 1971, provides support services to undergraduates whose economic, educational, and cutural backgrounds might limit their success in achieving their higher education goals. ]]>IUP was represented by three student/faculty teams at the ninth annual Undergraduate Research at the Capitol event, which was held at the State Capitol Building in Harrisburg on October 18, 2011.
The event’s mission is to bring together students, faculty, and legislators to share the experiences of students engaged in research scholarship at Pennsylvania colleges and universities.

]]>The School of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to announce that Dr. Calvin Masilela, director of the McNair Scholars Program, received additional funds in the amount of $223,839.00 from the U.S. Department of Education for his project, “McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair).”
The program prepares first-generation college students who are financially needy and those from underrepresented groups who have demonstrated strong academic potential to acquire requisite skills needed for entry into graduate studies.
Since the program implementation in 2004, a total of 135 students have been served. Of those, twenty-seven are enrolled in master’s programs and seventeen are enrolled in doctoral programs, while thirty have earned master’s degrees and two have earned J.D. degrees.
The total amount awarded for the performance period 10/01/2007–09/30/2012 is $1,147,839.

]]>It is IUP’s intention that the President’s Advancing Grantsmanship Fund helps to ease the teaching and research load carried by our faculty while advancing grant successes. The fund provides a $2,500 award for tenure-track faculty members who submit a grant proposal of at least $25,000. The faculty member has the option of receiving the award as either operating dollars or as additional salary plus benefits totaling $2,500.
Faculty members will receive funding after the grant is submitted. The proposal must be submitted during the 2011–2012 academic year (beginning July 1, 2011, and ending June 30, 2012).

One award, in the amount of $245,907, was from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for his project, “The Underground Mine Map Initiative.”
The other, in the amount of $33,319, was from Consol Energy, Inc. for his project, “Scanning and Digital Information Needs Related to the R&P Collection.”

]]>The School of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to announce that Dr. Tim Nuttle, Department of Biology, received an external funding award in the amount of $197,354 from the National Science Foundation for his project, “Investigating Mechanisms of Trophic Ricochet in Canopy Food Chains Resulting from Long-Term Legacies of Historic Deer Browsing.”
Dr. Nuttle and his students and colleagues conduct their research in Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest, which has hosted several decades of deer-browsing study.

Both Drs. Runge and Staszkiewicz are faculty members in the Department of Educational and School Psychology.
]]>This workshop (agenda below) is primarily designed for researchers and educators less experienced in proposing to the NSF; however, more experienced proposers and NSF grantees may well find the workshop useful and informative. It is NSF’s hope that events such as this will stimulate new interest in NSF programs at institutions that have not been among NSF’s traditional customers, as well as at premier research institutions. With an annual budget of about $6.9 billion dollars, the NSF is the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America’s colleges and universities.
The workshop will provide an overview of the Foundation, its mission, priorities, and budget. It will cover the NSF proposal and merit review process and NSF programs that cut across disciplines. Additionally, representatives from the seven NSF directorates and the Office of International Science and Engineering and the Office of Integrative Activities will make presentations on their programs and will also be available informally and in breakout sessions for discussions of potential research proposals.
Please do not use the IUP conference registration website, as this site will require you to make a nonrefundable payment. The School of Graduate Studies and Research and the IUP Research Institute will pay the registration fee for IUP faculty members who send their registration forms before the deadline. Awards will be given for the best two presentations in each category. Cash prizes totaling $1,000 will be awarded.

In this project, Archaeological Services is assisting the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation with the launch of the Project PATH (Project for Pennsylvania Transportation and Heritage) website and system, in partnership with Preservation PA.
The Project PATH site is to become the main gateway to Section 106 decision points, documentation, and consultation. In addition, the Project PATH site provides information about PennDot’s newly signed Section 106 Programmatic Agreement and associated handbook.
]]>The CWCESU is part of a national network developed to foster stewardship of the environment through collaborative research, technical assistance, and education that supports integrated ecosystem management of cultural, natural, and social resources.
Faculty members participating in the application included Drs. Beverly Chiarulli and Ben Ford, archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology; Drs. Tim Nuttle, Jeff Larkin, and Joseph Duchamp from the Department of Biology; Drs. Richard Hock and John Benhart from the Department of Geography and Regional Planning; and Dr. Yvonne Branan from the Department of Geoscience.
The CWCESU is a partnership among twenty-one universities and seven federal agency partners whose “members strive to understand and protect the natural and cultural resources of the region.”

]]>The position of assistant dean for Research supports all research and scholarship at IUP. This position is critical as we strive to advance the research and scholarly agenda of IUP and to fulfill IUP’s role as a doctoral research university. It is one of only two universitywide administrative positions on campus with the word “research” in the title. Dr. Creely replaces Dr. Michele Schwietz, who ably performed the position for more than ten years.
Dr. Creely has won a prestigious Fullbright Scholarship and an equally prestigious Max-Planck Institute Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. She has published scholarly articles, a book chapter, and is a co-PI on a patent. Dr. Creely has a Ph.D. from Brown University in molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry; she also has a J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, with a certificate of specialization in Law and Technology—specifically technology transfer (intellectual property). Dr. Creely is currently an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow in the Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health.

]]>The School of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to announce that Dr. James Dougherty, Department of Sociology and director of the Center for Northern Appalachian Studies, received an external award in the amount of $4,000 from East Tennessee State University for his project, “09-10 Appalachian Teaching Project.”
The funds were used to support participation of students from Dr. Dougherty’s Mass Media course in the annual Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP) Conference held in Washington, D.C., December 4–5, 2009.
The ATP is a consortium of fifteen universities from the Appalachian Region. It includes Virginia Tech, University of Tennessee, Appalachian State University, and Marshall University, among others, with IUP being the only university representing the northern tier of the region.
Students participating in the project are required to work on a community-based assignment that promotes economic sustainability. The IUP students organized a “People’s G20 Summit Week” that featured films and presentations and culminated in a two-day symposium that coincided with the G20 summit held in Pittsburgh. The project also received support from the IUP Center for Northern Appalachian Studies.
The ATP is funded through a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Each participating university receives $4,000 from the ATP to underwrite their endeavors. This marks the fourth consecutive year of IUP’s involvement with the ATP.

]]>This new formula provides 5 percent of the indirect cost funds to the principal investigator and another 5 percent to the department. No funds were provided to the principal investigator or the department under the old formula. This change was made to reward both faculty and departments for getting grants funded.
]]>This grant competition was created to encourage and support students as they undertake research and creative projects which will contribute new insights in the students’ chosen academic fields. Two grant competitions are held annually; proposals are due the first Monday in November and the first Monday in February.

]]>As part of their course work, Gale Noonan, Audra Palmo, Chris Baum, Donna Pike, Heidi Buterbaugh, Jennie Feight, Polly Davis, and Sonya Arotin, along with Professor Nashat Zuraikat, completed a book review of author Bill Strickland’s Make the Impossible Possible; One Man’s Crusade to Inspire Others to Dream Bigger and Achieve the Extraordinary. This book review was completed as part of the requirements for HSAD 761 (Human Services Administration Practicum) and will be published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, Volume 20, November 4, 2009. Dr. Nashat Zuraikat was the instructor for this course and assisted the students with this publication.
