  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">The 32nd annual Labor-Management Conference will be held on Friday, April 19, 2013, at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana, Pa.</p>

<p>The conference is designed to assist professionals in both organized and unorganized environments—union members and officers, attorneys involved in employment matters, labor relations neutrals, and anyone interested in employment issues. Our objective is to give attendees the opportunity to keep abreast of decsisions affecting their workplaces and current trends in the employment field.<br /><br />
Our presenters are actively involved in the day-to-day application of legislation and court decisions and will provide updates on the issues of current importance such as federal labor law, health care reform, employee rights, government stimulus, and collective bargaining trends. Those in attendance are urged to take advantage of these exceptional resources and seek answers to the questions relevant to their situation.</p>

  <title>Student Brean Awarded $10,000 Fellowship at Society for Human Resource Management Conference</title>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">Katherine Brean, an executive in human resources at Redstone Highlands Senior Living Communities, was recently awarded the prestigious Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship for Graduate Study in HR at the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) Leadership Conference on November 16, 2012, in National Harbor, Md.</p>
<p>“Words cannot express how grateful and honored I feel to have been selected for the Susan Meisinger Fellowship award,” said Brean. “I am proud of my work and commitment in the HR profession, and it is truly exciting to be recognized in this way. I am looking forward to my master’s studies in employment and labor relations. I hope to use my education and experience to make positive contributions in my organization and within the human resources community.” Brean is using the fellowship to fund her master’s degree in Employment and Labor Relations from IUP.</p>
<p>The fellowship, endowed by SHRM and affiliates—the HR Certification Institute and the SHRM Foundation—is named after former SHRM president and CEO Susan R. Meisinger. Selection is based on leadership, work experience in HR, demonstrated community involvement, and undergraduate academic achievement.</p>
<p>In order to qualify for the Susan R. Meisinger Fellowship, an HR professional must:</p>
<ul>
<li>Be an SHRM member or carry professional certification from the HR Certification Institute</li>
<li>Have a minimum of 10 years’ work experience, five of which are in HR</li>
<li>Be accepted into a qualified master’s program</li>
<li>Have earned a minimum grade-point average of at least 3.5 out of a four-point grading scale</li>
</ul>
<p>Katherine is a student in the <a title="Employment and Labor Relations" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3831">Employment and Labor Relations</a> program, taking classes at IUP’s <a title="Monroeville Graduate and Professional Center" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=21527">Monroeville Graduate and Professional Center</a>.</p>]]></content:encoded>

  <description><![CDATA[<p>Members of the 2012 graduate chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management recently made Halloween treat bags full of treats for the children at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.</p>]]></description>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="introduction">Members of the 2012 graduate chapter of the <a title="Society for Human Resource Management" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=39349">Society for Human Resource Management</a> recently made Halloween treat bags full of treats for the children at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. The members raised funds to pay for the treats by selling Homecoming t-shirts.</p>
<p>The members delivered the bags the week of Halloween to be distributed to any children that were in the hospital during the Halloween Holiday.</p>

  <title>Piper Receives Senate Award for Service</title>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<img class="right-aligned-image" title="David Piper" border="0" alt="David Piper" align="right" https://www.iup.edu:443/uploadedImages/UnivSenDistiFacultyAwards-400.jpg width="127" height="188" /><p class="introduction">David Piper was honored with the 2012 University Senate Distinguished Faculty Award for Service.</p>
<p>Every year since 1969, the IUP University Senate has invited students, faculty, and staff to nominate faculty members for this recogniton. The Senate Awards Committee determines the honorees on the basis of significant contributions to the university.</p>
<p>Award recipients will be recognized at Commencement on May 12, 2012.</p>
<p>Piper, professor and department chair of <a title="Employment and Labor Relations" href="https://www.iup.edu:443/WorkArea/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=3831">Employment and Labor Relations</a>, leads the Universitywide Graduate Curriculum Committee. He also heads the board of directors of the Student Cooperative Association, a nonprofit organization that provides physical and financial support for more than 100 campus organizations. The association is currently planning construction of a new recreational complex adjacent to the Hadley Union Building.</p>
<p>Piper founded an annual benefit dinner to recognize alumni of Employment and Labor Relations that has raised more than $12,000 in scholarship funds for incoming students.</p>
<p>His community service includes nine years as deputy coroner for Indiana County and, in 2005, coordination with the American Red Cross of a fund drive that raised more than $13,000 for victims of Hurricane Katrina. He also serves as an arbitrator-mediator for the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor.</p>
