The emphasis is on safety and hands-on practice to familiarize candidates with proper terminology and boating techniques. Participants should have some prior exposure to sailing but need not be experts.
This course will be taught by a certified US Sailing instructor trainer from Pittsburgh. It is co-sponsored by Friends of Yellow Creek and the IUP Sailing Club. There is a US Sailing fee associated with this course.

The Ebony and Ivory Fashion Show will take place on Saturday, May 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the HUB Ohio Room. The Black Emphasis Committee presents, Live from the Red Carpet Fashion show. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 with an Icard and $10 without. Music by DJ Bleeze.

]]>The Islamic Awareness Day is the event that the Muslim Student Association, along with the Islamic Center of Indiana are sponsoring to educate students, staff, and the community in Indiana, PA about the Muslims and Islam in general as well as the Muslims and Islam in Indiana, PA in particular. The event will start with many interesting sessions including the introduction about the Muslim Community in Indiana, then moving to the keynote speaker Dr. Harold Morales, a professor in the Religious Studies Department at IUP. After that, there will be a video documentary as well as some corrections to the most widespread misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. The event will end with a question and answer session at 6:45 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. we will have a dinner. Nine pairs of fraternities and sororities will be competing in Greek Sing. There will also be a performance by Dance Explosion. The Greek King and Queen candidates will be introduced at the event as well.

]]>Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest honor society for all academic disciplines, with 300 chapters throughout the nation. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty and professional staff members and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify. The university’s chapter is one of only 19 in the nation receiving this honor for recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engaging the community of scholars in service.
Every year, Phi Kappa Phi awards 51 Fellowship Awards valued at $5,000 and five awards valued at $15,000 to members who are entering their first year of graduate or professional study. IUP’s chapter may select one candidate from the local applicants to compete for the national, society-wide awards. Last year, the IUP nominee was awarded a very prestigious award that he applied toward his first year of medical school expenses. Applications for Fellowships will be reviewed by a local committee made up of IUP Phi Kappa Phi advisory board members. One applicant from the local pool of applicants will be forwarded to the national offices of Phi Kappa Phi for further consideration.

]]>Considered one of the greatest living Tibetan masters today, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche will visit Indiana to present a series of lectures on techniques from Tibetan Buddhism that can be used in generating peace and compassion.

Refuge is a prerequisite for the empowerment on Sunday afternoon. Refuge is a first step on the Buddhist path to enlightenment. The ceremony of the Chenrezig empowerment is given as a blessing and invokes Chenrezig who is the embodiment of limitless compassion.
Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche is currently the abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachackra, one of the main Tibetan monasteries in the U.S. Ordained as a monk at the age of twelve at Thrangu Monastery in eastern Tibet, he is one of the few Tibetan scholars that have received the highest levels of training in Tibetan Buddhism. Due to the political situation in Tibet in the late 1950’s, he fled his homeland in 1959 through the Himalayas to Bhutan and eventually India. In the following years, he resided at monasteries in Bhutan and India where he provided teachings and support for Tibetan refugee communities. In 1975 His Holiness the 16th Karmapa acknowledged Rinpoche’s attainment with the title Choje Lama (Superior Dharma Master). At the request of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa, Khenpo Rinpoche immigrated to the U.S. in 1976 to establish and guide the development of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra located near Woodstock, NY. After more than forty years of teaching on Tibetan Buddhist topics, Khenpo Rinpoche has a prolific body of work published in Chinese and English, as well as dozens of teachings that have been published in Densal magazine and transcripts by KTD’s Namse Bagdzo Bookstore. At age 89, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche still maintains a rigorous international teaching schedule.

]]>The sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon are hosting their annual event, Volley for 65 Roses to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation. Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of approximately 70,000 children and young adults in the United States. Fifty years ago, children with CF usually did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, because of Foundation-supported research and care, patients are living to an average age of only 37 years old. Delta Phi Epsilon is committed to helping the CF Foundation add even more years to the lives of those with CF.
Registering for this event is simple. Teams must have six to eight members. Co-ed teams are strongly suggested. The cost per team is $25, checks can be made payable to Delta Phi Epsilon. If non-players wish to support a team, admission is $1 for the small workshop on Cystic fibrosis that will kick off the event. Together, we can spike cystic fibrosis into the dust.

Alpha Phi Omega is a national service fraternity which was established for the purpose of assembling college students in the fellowship principles of Alpha Phi Omega to develop leadership, to develop friendships, to provide service to humanity, and to further the freedom that is our national, educational, and intellectual heritage. The rich heritage of Alpha Phi Omega is derived from the fellowship of the principles of the Boy Scouts of America as embodied in the scout Oath and Law. Membership in this organization is available to both male and female students who fulfill the membership requirements prescribed by the national fraternity and by this chapter. Membership in Alpha Phi Omega shall be open to all students of IUP, Indiana campus. Membership in this chapter shall only be granted upon the approval of the applicant of this chapter and after the applicant has fulfilled the membership requirements prescribed by the national fraternity and by this chapter.

The purpose of the Pride Alliance shall be to: foster a safe and supportive academic and social environment for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and ally community of IUP; to provide educational information on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered issues at IUP; add to the rich diversity of IUP’s academic and residence life and push for unity among IUP students; and address incidents of homophobia and heterosexism in a manner that will create higher levels of understanding.

The Haven Project is designed to increase and improve counseling and advocacy services for students who experience violence. The Haven Project also offers prevention education about stalking, dating/relationship violence, and sexual assault.
