Starting in September, students will have the opportunity to complete Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s master’s degree in Criminology entirely on line. This is IUP’s second on-line graduate program.

“We’ve worked to develop a program that not only meets the academic standards required to prepare students for administrative and management positions in the criminal justice system and related fields, but meets the needs of nontraditional students with nontraditional schedules,” Dr. Jamie Martin, professor of criminology and coordinator of the master’s program, said.

“The on-line program also offers an opportunity for students throughout the nation and world to complete their degree work without the necessity of travel to IUP.

“While most positions in the criminal justice field do not require a master’s degree for employment, a master’s degree enhances promotion opportunities and in some cases is even required for promotion.”

Students would take courses in a cohort of twenty-five students, meaning that the students complete coursework as a group. Coursework would include two courses per term for five semesters.

Applications are being accepted now and are due by April 15. For more information or an application, visit the IUP Admissions website, e-mail crim-online@iup.edu, or call 724-357-2720.

In addition to meeting the requirements for admission, a student must be able to demonstrate an understanding of criminological theory and the criminal justice system—generally satisfied by a bachelor’s degree in criminology, criminal justice, or a related field; experience within the justice system; or specialized training or graduate or undergraduate studies in a related field.

Echoing the consortium “theme,” Gido’s vignettes described the political and social backdrop of the era in which women and their families struggled to survive in central Montana homesteading and coal-mining communities. She also discussed Jeannette Rankin as the first woman Congressman, an early suffragette from Montana, who went to D.C. in 1916.
