The Hearing Loss Association of Pennsylvania is sponsoring (with support from the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation) a one-day educational conference in Harrisburg on April 19, 2013, designed to provide hard of hearing employees and job seekers (including students entering the workforce) with information and skills they need to achieve communication access in the workplace.

The conference also has the objective of educating employers and human resources personnel about the many simple accommodations which enable hard of hearing workers to communicate on the job. That’s why “Working Together” has been adopted as the conference theme.

The cost for this conference is $40 for individuals and $70 for students with a parent. For a complete agenda or to register for this conference visit the Hearing Loss Association of Pennsylvania website.

Plenary sessions will provide information on the impact of hearing loss on work and life; workplace barriers that still exist more than 20 years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act; and a panel discussion allowing participants to ask questions of successful hard of hearing employees and their employers. An exhibit hall will showcase assistive equipment and resources.

For announcement, program, and registration information, visit the Hearing and Loss Association of Pennsylvania’s website by copying and pasting this URL: www.hla-pa.org/NewsEvents/EmpConf13/ . If you need further information, you may contact Steve Schultz, conference chairperson, by e-mail at schultz@hla-pa.org or by telephone at 717-761-3632.

Nominations are being sought until October 17, 2012, for the third annual Ray Coppler Award. Nomination form.

The Ray Coppler Award was created to annually honor and give special recognition to a student, faculty, staff, or administrator for exemplary contributions to disability education, awareness and/or inclusiveness at IUP.

Are you aware of an IUP community member who you believe might be deserving of this award? Would you please consider taking a couple minutes to nominate them?

This could be a student, faculty, staff, administrator, etc. It might be someone with a disability, or someone without a disability. It could be you (individuals may nominate themselves).

Do you know of someone who has

advocated for the rights of individuals with disabilities to achieve greater independence and integration?

used their time, talents, or resources to improve access or the quality of campus life and learning for people with disabilities?

developed unique opportunities and experiences for individuals with disabilities?

promoted awareness and understanding of disability-related issues?

removed barriers (physical, social, academic, etc.) to create greater accessibility?

The first annual recipient of the award in 2010 was Ray Coppler, an undergraduate student with a disability who has since graduated and for whom the award is permanently named. The second annual recipient in 2011 was Lindsey DePra, also an undergraduate student with a disability who has since graduated.

October is National Disability Awareness Month (most recently known as National Disability Employment Awareness Month). To celebrate, IUP will be hosting a Six O’Clock Series presentation on October 29 by Veronica Villalobos, director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for U.S. Office of Personnel Management and former attorney with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Read more about Villalobos. At the conclusion of Villalobos’ presentation, we will present the third Annual Ray Coppler Award to a deserving IUP community member.

The brief nomination form can be completed online until October 17.

An appointed selection committee will review submissions after the deadline and decide which nominee is most deserving of this year’s award. The award will be presented at the Six O’Clock Series on October 29.

Thanks for your consideration in offering a nomination!

NASA is looking to increase the number of blind and disabled students, pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers through its internship programs.

There is a 2 percent hiring goal. Students can apply until February 1, 2011. They can register for an account and look for internships anytime at the NASA internships website. Internships run for ten weeks from May 31 through August 5, 2011.

In order to be eligible to apply, students must be accepted as freshmen at an accredited institution of higher learning, i.e., a college or university at the time of the internship (a “rising freshman”). NASA has internships for rising freshmen through doctoral students in STEM fields. A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required to apply; however, applicants must understand that the competition for internships is keen. The age limits for interns are eighteen years and up.

Internships are available at all NASA centers nationwide. Students can submit applications where they either select or do not select an opportunity or opportunities. Selecting an opportunity or opportunities has the advantage of allowing applicants to be considered by mentors who work in disciplines of interest and at a particular center. For example, an opportunity having to do with the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) will be at Goddard in Maryland because SDO is there. Not selecting any opportunities may result in no mentors even looking at their applications because they will not have flagged their applications to mentors’ opportunities.

It’s important to make clear that applications can be viewed by all mentors whether students select opportunities or not. However, not selecting any opportunities means that prospective interns will be hoping that a mentor happens to read their applications rather than directing their applications to mentors in fields and at centers of interest.

Also, organizations and schools can nominate qualified students with a letter of recommendation. The students still have to go through the regular application process, but the letter will be very helpful. The letter would be submitted with the online application. Copies of these nomination letters should be e-mailed to kenneth.a.silberman@nasa.gov in addition to submitting with the application.

Students who are selected for internships will receive an offer letter by e-mail sometime after February 2, 2011. They will then have five days to either accept or reject the offer on the NASA internship website. The offer will automatically expire after five days if no action is taken.

This year, the Multiple Perspectives Conference is celebrating its tenth anniversary and looking forward to this summer’s twentieth anniversary of the ADA refreshed by recent amendments. This is an opportunity to consider where we are, how we got here, and where we are going. One of our annual traditions has been a poster reception following the Ken Campbell Memorial Lecture.
Community service and applied problem solving from service learning classes or student organizations

Art and performance

Posters can take a variety of forms, including print material mounted on posterboard or display panels or arranged on a table, or PowerPoint presentation, webpages, or video presentations from laptop (ten minute maximum length).

Presentation materials must fit on a 3' × 6' table or along six feet or less of wall space. Presenters must provide their own equipment.

Visit these sites for tips on developing a poster presentation:
