Black History Month Keynote Address: An Interactive Panel Presentation: The Art of Resistance - An Intergenerational Dialogue Between the Civil Rights and Hip-Hop Generation featuring Sonia Sanchez etal.

Black History Month 2013 is themed 2050: Rooted in the Past, Moving Forward and this program is presented as a special dedication to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It concludes a day-long list of events and features an interactive panel presentation of noted scholars, activist and performers that is designed to answer such questions as "Can today's art be an act of resustance to public policy that too often marginalizes youth, particularly those from Black and Brown communities - or is it simply a diversion in an era of individualism and consumer culture? Designed in consultation with Bakari Kitwana, journalist, activist, and political commentator on politics and youth, featured panelists include Ms. Sonia Sanchez, poet-activist; Dr. Haki Madhubuti, publisher,poet, activist; Mr. Adam Mansbach, author; Ms. Chinaka Hodge, poet/playwright (Def Poetry Jam); Popmaster Fabel Pabon, Hip-Hop Pioneer; and Dr. James Peterson, Director of Africana Studies, as moderator. Panel Presentation: History of the Women's Movement in Pittsburgh

Four women associated with the exhibit, "In Sisterhood: The Women's Movement in Pittsburgh" - Dr. Patricia Ulbrich, Ms. Barbara Hafer, Ms. Ann Begler, and Dr. Maureen McHugh - will discuss "share their experiences, the importance of the Women's Movement, and the related exhibit," whose goal is to not only pay tribute to the women in Western Pennsylvania who "worked hard to promote equality," but also, "to raise awareness about the role of social movements in our democratice society and to encourage civic engagement." This event is FREE and cosponsored by the President's Commission on the Status of Women in in collaboration with Women Studies, the African American Cultural Center, 6 O'clock Series, and a number of other University departments. Course: Drawing Fundamentals

Sprowls Hall, Room 211

Get an introduction to the essential materials and techniques of drawing, students will develop observational abilities and rendering skills. The instructor presents methods of describing objects in terms of line, form, value, shape, and texture. Course projects help students explore the principals of light, space, composition, study basic shapes and graphite and charcoal. Students will be encouraged to draw from life setting objects, study basic shapes and shading, and experiment with new tools and drawing media. By the end of the class, students will have skills necessary to develop their relationship to their own work and to convey ideas and concepts through drawling. This class is for both beginners and students with experience. This course is offered through Community University Studies.

Yoga Class

This yoga class begins with basic postures, concentrating on flexibility, strength, balance, concentration, and breathing. As the class progresses, yoga flow and more advanced postures will be added according to needs of the participants. All ages levels of yoga practitioners are welcome. The goal of this class will be stress relief though physical movement. Be sure your doctor recommends this practice. Materials needed: Bring a yoga or exercise mat for your comfort. This course is offered through Community University Studies.

Exhibit: "Promise Land" by Chele Isaac

*An artist talk and reception will also be held on February 21 at 5:00 p.m. This exhibit features the work of Wisconsin-based artist Chele Isaac, which utilizes multi-channel video projections, sound, and sculpture to examine themes of migration, dislocation, and the search for identity.
